The area

Marylebone is the part of the West End where people actually live. Two old estates have kept its Georgian streets intact, and the high street feels more like a market town than central London.

Living in Marylebone

A village in the West End

Most of Marylebone belongs to two estates, Howard de Walden and Portman, and between them they have looked after it for nearly three centuries. That is why its Georgian terraces have survived almost intact, and why the high street has independent shops rather than chains.

The streets follow a grid, except Marylebone Lane, which still bends along the course of the old Tyburn stream. Wide streets such as Harley Street and Wimpole Street are lined with tall Georgian houses, many now divided into apartments, and red-brick mansion blocks fill the spaces between.

People who live here walk everywhere. Regent's Park is at the top of the high street, Oxford Street and Mayfair at the bottom, and on Sundays there is a farmers' market a few steps from the high street. For buyers who want a lateral apartment with a lift and a porter in the centre of London, there are few better places.
