Highgate
A hilltop village of Georgian houses, deep gardens and long views over London.

Highgate sits on the other hill, across the Heath from Hampstead. It is smaller and quieter, with a village green, Georgian houses around Pond Square and some of the longest views over London.
Living in Highgate
The village at the top of the hill
Highgate grew up around the old road north out of London, and the village still has the shape of a coaching stop: a high street at the top, a green and Pond Square just behind it, and lanes running steeply down on every side. The Grove, a row of late seventeenth-century houses, is where Coleridge spent his last years.
Below the village the gardens get longer and the houses larger. Swain's Lane drops past Highgate Cemetery, Waterlow Park falls away towards Archway, and from the top of Highgate West Hill the whole of the City is laid out in front of you.
People choose Highgate for space and schools at a lower price than Hampstead, and for a village where shopkeepers know their customers. Kenwood and the Heath are a short walk, and Highgate Wood is at the end of the road.
