The area

Primrose Hill is a small neighbourhood of painted houses at the foot of the hill it is named after. From the top you see the whole of central London, and Regent's Park is across the road.

Living in Primrose Hill

At the foot of the hill

Primrose Hill was built in the 1840s and 1850s as a modest suburb next to Regent's Park, and it has kept the scale it was built at: three- and four-storey terraces, painted in soft colours, around a few small squares. Chalcot Square and Chalcot Crescent are the ones people photograph.

Writers and actors moved here in the twentieth century. A blue plaque on Fitzroy Road marks the house where W. B. Yeats grew up and Sylvia Plath later lived, and another on Chalcot Square marks her first flat in London. The hill itself is protected, so the view from the top, across Regent's Park to the City, will stay as it is.

Daily life is built around Regent's Park Road, a short street of cafés, a bookshop and a butcher. London Zoo is on the edge of the park, the Regent's Canal runs along the south side, and Camden Town is ten minutes away on foot when you want something louder.
